![]() ![]() Raury ends the track with a skit of a heartbroken caller talking to a radio host, telling the story of how his girlfriend left him for another man. While the production and overall tone of the track is reminiscent of “Woodcrest Manor” from his debut album, the delivery of Raury’s vocals shows growth in his maturity, as his sentences are much tighter and the transitions between the chorus and verses are smooth. In this track, Raury’s soft, lilting chorus is juxtaposed with rough rap verses about a childhood friend who turned to a life of gangs and violence. Raury All We Need (Columbia) Pharrell Williams and Kanye West have done untold work over the last decade and a half toward expanding hip-hop’s purview, helping to reconcile the political. It also features what I believe to be one of Drakes greatest verses on. These deep musings flow into the more personal track, “Woodcrest Manor II,” the sequel to Indigo Child’s “Woodcrest Manor,” named after the neighborhood in which Raury grew up. And these are 150 of the albums released in this decade that have been part of. delivers the final verse on the following track, “Forbidden Knowledge,” as both question ulterior motives from those in power, and whether or not humans have access to knowledge that they shouldn’t with the invention of technology. In the final minute of the song, a wobbling bass line protrudes through the peaceful strumming, coming to the forefront just as Raury delivers a rap verse in which he speaks about the temptations of materialism in American youth, with lines such as “We’re meant to be tools of God / but instead we cop us a Porsche.” The general theme of the album, correlating to the album title, is expressed in the lines “Money disguise the fact / that we need to discover love in the earth and sky and beyond / love is what’s missing, love don’t live here no more.” Raury’s message has remained intact from the first day his songs broke out onto the Internet and his words were heard by the mainstream, and All We Need continues to express these ideals in a concise and entertaining manner.įellow Southern rapper Big K.R.I.T.
